Subsurface Utility Designating – Using surface geophysical methods (usually electro-magnetic detection) to sense the presence of a subsurface utility and to mark its approximate horizontal position on the ground surface. The position is often surveyed and mapped for use by a design professional.

Subsurface Utility Locating – The process of exposing a subsurface utility system component to the light of day and accurately documenting, at least, its precise horizontal and vertical position; the documentation may also include general soil characteristics, utility condition, material and size.
